How does Structural CoPilot work?
Genia’s Structural CoPilot takes architectural floor plan as inputs and generates structural design as output. Once it receives an architectural drawing, it first feeds the architecture into a Generative AI network to explore 1,000s layout options. For each generated option, Structural CoPilot evaluates it against physical stability, costs, ease of construction and sustainability.
What file formats does Genia support?
For input and output, Genia supports PDF and CAD (.dwg, .dxf) files at the moment. We will support 3D BIM files in first half 2025.
What kinds of properties does Genia support?
At the moment, we support low-rise and mid-rise lightframe timber structures. We are on path to roll out support for steel frames in our upcoming release.
Can Genia’s Structural CoPilot generate multiple design options?
Yes. Among the 1,000s design options generated by AI, Structural CoPilot presents to users the most balanced design, along with the optimal designs along each dimension of physical stability, costs and sustainability. Structural Engineers will be able to explore design flexibility with these options.
How does Genia ensure physical stability of the generated design?
Genia’s Structural CoPilot encompasses a structural analysis engine that runs both analytical assessments as well as finite element analysis. As part of the structural analysis, it takes into consideration of local building codes, as well as availabilities of materials nearby the property location to ensure compliance and feasibility. The structural analysis results will be printed out as calculation sheets to allow structural engineers to examine the physics simulation step by step.
Are the generated designs physically valid and compliant to building codes?
Yes. Structural CoPilot integrates building codes including IRC, IBC and NBCC and automatically fetches the most relevant requirements based on the location of the property. These requirements will be plugged into the structural analysis engine to make sure all designs presented to structural engineers are compliant to local building codes.
Can user modify the generated design?
By the year end of 2024, we will support design editing to allow engineers to directly modify design assumptions and the AI-produced structural layouts. These human editing cues will also help AI improve the quality of generated designs in the future.
